Date of Birth: March 7, 1935

Gary Aldcorn was born in Shaunavon, SK on March 7, 1935 and moved to Winnipeg at the age of twelve. If there was a sport to be played, you can bet that Aldcorn not only played it but played it well. Hockey, baseball, basketball, track & field, lacrosse, football and curling… you name it, he played it.

Aldcorn played baseball in the late 40’s for Rosedales, and in the 50’s for Sir John Franklin, Columbus Club and the Native Sons winning city championships at the junior and senior levels. He also won city titles in basketball and football with Daniel MacIntyre in 1953. He won high jump titles at both Isaac Brock and Daniel Mac and skipped his curling team to the St. Paul’s University championship in 1963.

But Aldcorn’s greatest achievements came in two sports: hockey and lacrosse.

From 1947-50 Aldcorn played lacrosse at Isaac Brock winning Bantam titles. He was named to the Manitoba All-Star squad that made the Minto Cup finals in 1954 and ‘55. In 1954 the Manitoba All-Stars defeated the Long Branch (ON) Monarchs in best-of-three final with the deciding game score of 7-6 and became the first Manitoba team to defeat an eastern Canadian champion in the history of Junior A Lacrosse. That earned them the right to play the Western representative in the Minto Cup final and they lost to the PNE Indians of Vancouver (BC). In 1955 Manitoba won the Western Junior A Championship by defeating the defending national champion Mount Pleasant Indians of Vancouver (BC) in best-of-three final with the deciding game score of 11-9. That earned them the right to face the Eastern representative in the Minto Cup final and they lost to their old nemesis Long Branch.  Mickoski is also inducted into the Hall of Fame for his achievements in lacrosse.

Aldcorn’s hockey resume is even more impressive. He learned the game playing for Clifton, Isaac Brock and played midget and juvenile with the Winnipeg Monarchs. He continued his junior career with the Monarchs from 1951-54. Aldcorn played on the Memorial Cup champion Toronto Marlboros in 1954-55(OHA). The following season he returned home to Winnipeg to turn pro and play in the WHL. The Warriors won the Edinburgh Trophy as the top minor pro champions in Canada. From 1956-59 he split time between the Rochester Americans (AHL) and the Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL). In 1959-60 he played for the Detroit Red Wings and enjoyed his best year in the NHL scoring 22 goals and finishing with 51 points, good for 16th place in league scoring behind Bobby Hulls 81 points. Aldcorn split the next season between the Red Wings and Boston Bruins and sat out a year to regain his amateur status. He played for the Winnipeg Maroons in 1962-63 and for Canada’s national team in 1964-65. He helped Canada to a fourth place finish with a 4-3 record in Tampere, Finland as the powerful Soviets took the gold.

As a builder Gary Aldcorn coached the St. Boniface Mohawks from 1965-68 and helped coach the national team in 1970. He was also Director of Hockey Development for the CAHA (now Hockey Canada) from 1971-75. He was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997. His lacrosse teams were inducted into the Manitoba Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2012.
