Ralph Lyndon is the quintessential example of a multi-sport athlete when one looks at his long and impressive resume. Lacrosse, hockey, football… he played them all at a high level and has been inducted into several other halls of fame as a result.
In lacrosse, Lyndon played Bantam for Isaac Brock from 1947-49, winning a city championship. He added another city title in 1950 with the Winnipeg Orioles at the Midget level. From 1952-56 he played for the Manitoba Junior All-Stars. In 1954 Manitoba advanced to the Minto Cup championship final by defeating the Eastern champion Long Branch Monarchs two games to one. In Vancouver they lost the national final in three games as the Mount Pleasant PNE Indians (New Westminster, BC) won the Minto Cup. In 1955 Manitoba defeated the defending champs from BC but then lost in four games to Long Branch in the Minto Cup finals. Lyndon impressed so much that Victoria Shamrocks seniors tried to recruit him after the ‘55 final, but the Canadian Lacrosse Association prevented the move.
Lyndon played football with Daniel McIntyre where he led the Maroons to three consecutive Manitoba high school championships from 1950-52. Lyndon was an all-star and team captain in 1951 & ‘52. His two years of junior football with the Winnipeg Rods saw him reach the national final in 1954. Defending champion The Rods defeated Windsor AKO’s in 1955 by a score of 19-13 in a brand new Winnipeg Stadium. Lyndon also played football for the University of North Dakota in 1957 and 1960.
Hockey saw some of Lyndon’s greatest success starting with the Winnipeg Monarchs. In the early 50s he won Juvenile and Junior provincial titles, advancing to the Western finals in the latter. In 1955-56 he played pro hockey in England with Harringay Racers and won rookie of the year. From 1957-60 Lyndon played for UND. The Fighting Sioux lost the final of the NCAA Frozen Four in 1958. North Dakota won the Frozen Four in 1959 with Lyndon tallying a goal and an assist in the championship final. He was chosen to the Second All-Star Team. He also had success with Winnipeg Maroons, Warroad Lakers, Transcona, St. Boniface Mohawks and he won a Hardy Cup as a pick-up with Flin Flon in 1965.
Ralph Lyndon gave back to sport as a coach for many years in hockey, football and volleyball in Transcona and St. James.
